aglow vs phorest

Running memberships on Phorest, and it's mostly landing on you?

Keep Phorest for bookings. Let aglow run your memberships, so the admin, the chasing and the awkward money conversations aren't yours to carry.

This page is written for clinics running memberships on their own. Larger or multi-location? Your considerations are different.

Dedicated memberships service management

Built for beauty, not bolted on

A memberships add-on inside the booking platform.

Phorest is good at what it was built for: bookings, calendars, POS, keeping your day moving. Memberships got added on top, as a feature inside a booking platform.

aglow is built the other way around. Memberships are the whole job. When it's just you, or nearly just you, the boring and expensive parts of running one, contracts, chasing failed payments, member support, compliance for injectors, don't disappear. They land on you, between clients. aglow carries them instead.

Here's exactly where the two differ.

What's the difference between Phorest's memberships and aglow?

Phorest's membership tool lets you set up recurring plans, credit banks and VIP discounts inside your existing Phorest account. But there is more to managing memberships than that.

With aglow, you get membership management services that actually matter:

Contracts

Automated payment chasing

Real human member support

Compliance for injectables

Variable priced treatments

Just think of us as your member concierge team.

What aglow takes off your plate

Running a membership by hand doesn't feel like much with three members. At thirty, it's a second job. aglow is an extension of your team without the salary. Here's the work we carry so you don't have to.

Chasing failed payments

The job nobody wants. When a client's card fails, we follow it up. You don't send the awkward “your payment didn't go through” message to someone booked in with you next week.

The day-to-day admin

Card updates, date changes, member questions. Members handle their own in the aglow app, and anything else comes to us, not your front desk.

The membership contract

Every aglow membership comes with a legal agreement built in, so your recurring revenue is contracted, not just hopeful. No lawyer's invoice.

Compliance, if you're a cosmetic injector

A generic package or voucher has no guardrails to keep you the right side of TGA and AHPRA rules. Treatment Wallet is purpose built to work within them.

98% failed payment recovery. 87% protocol completion.

A side-by-side comparison

Keep your booking software. Add the membership platform built specifically for beauty and aesthetics.

Why credit-based memberships carry risk.

Phorest's credit-based plans work like a prepaid tab. The client pays in, the clinic holds the balance, and it's drawn down as they book in. Familiar model. But with a credit-bank approach, the risk sits with you.

Balance sheet liability, not asset

Money collected for services not yet delivered is unearned revenue. That’s a liability until it’s redeemed, and it affects how your business is valued.

Revenue you can’t recognise

Until the treatment is delivered you can’t book the income, so reported revenue lags the cash actually sitting in your account.

Refund exposure if they leave

Unredeemed balances can be claimed back. Without contracts you carry that exposure with no agreed terms behind it.

Harder to value and borrow against

Lenders and buyers discount prepaid balances. A large credit liability can reduce what your business is worth on paper.

Credit exposure, chargebacks, disputes, unsecured client balances. With Phorest they're all yours to carry. Phorest processes the payments; the risk is yours.

Treatment Wallet works differently. Funds sit in a ringfenced account through our card infrastructure, not in the clinic's own bank account, so they don't show up as a liability on your books. Clients can see their balance any time in the aglow app, pause, increase or decrease their contributions whenever they like, and there's no lock-in. Nothing to track, nothing to reconcile.

When Phorest on its own is enough.

Straight answer: if you've got a handful of members, five or fewer, on simple plans, and you're not looking to grow that, Phorest's built-in memberships will do the job. You don't need a second system for that.

It changes once memberships become real revenue. Past ten members and growing, the admin, the failed payments and the money conversations start to stack up, and they all land on one person. You. That's the point where a system earns its keep. aglow is built for the operator who wants recurring revenue at scale, not just a few plans ticking over.

Already running a larger or multi-location clinic? The maths and the risks look different at that size.

Where Phorest’s membership tools fall short.

A few gaps worth knowing about if you’re running (or thinking about running) memberships through Phorest:

No purpose-built pathway if you're a cosmetic injector

Phorest wasn't built with TGA and AHPRA compliance in mind. A generic credit bank has no guardrails to stop a clinic accidentally breaching the rules that say injectables can't be discounted, incentivised or pre-sold, tie a VIP perk or a bundled discount to that spend, even unintentionally, and the clinic is exposed. That compliance risk, and every other risk that comes with a credit based approach, sits entirely with the clinic.

Your memberships shouldn't be hostage to your booking software

If you ever move away from Phorest, for pricing, features, support, whatever the reason, your membership structure, member history and contracts don't come with you. You're rebuilding from scratch on whatever you move to next. With aglow, your memberships were never tied to your booking software in the first place, so that risk doesn't exist. And if you're moving from Phorest to aglow right now, we'll migrate your members across for you, free of charge, so there's nothing to rebuild on your end either.

No dedicated payment chasing

Phorest processes the payment. What happens when a payment fails is on you and your front desk to manage. aglow follows up automatically, so you're not the one having the awkward money conversation.

No contracts or cancellation policy framework

Phorest's membership feature doesn't include a legal agreement layer. If a member wants to cancel early or disputes a charge, you're working it out yourself.

No weekly option, and that's the frequency members actually want

Phorest's fastest cadence is fortnightly, then monthly or quarterly, set by the clinic. Weekly is by far the most commonly chosen frequency among aglow members, and it isn't on Phorest's list at all. With aglow, the client chooses their own frequency, including weekly, and their own start date within the window you set.

"Guaranteed revenue" isn't the same as contracted revenue

Phorest's memberships can run to a fixed term, like a year, with payments collected automatically. But there's no legal contract or cancellation policy sitting behind it that we could find, which means the commitment is really just a payment schedule, not an enforceable agreement.

No way to sell treatment plans while you sleep

Phorest's closest equivalent is a simple interest form on your website, a visitor leaves their details and it lands in your dashboard for someone on your team to follow up. aglow's AI consultations do the actual selling: built on your specific treatment menu and pricing, they run a real consultation with the visitor, put together a personalised treatment plan, and send it for them to accept, any hour of the day, no staff member involved. If they don't convert on the spot, the conversation and their answers are captured so you're following up with something specific rather than a cold enquiry. If they do convert, it's contracted revenue in your dashboard before anyone on your team has said a word.

Pricing isn't published

Phorest works on custom quotes, based on business size, locations and features, so there's no way to know what you'll pay without going through a sales conversation first. aglow's pricing is published on our website, plain and simple, no call required to see it.

SMS costs add up

Phorest includes an SMS allowance, and messages beyond it, or longer messages that split into multiple SMS, are charged at standard rates. That's real money every time you invite a client to join or send a payment reminder. With aglow, SMS invites and payment reminders don't cost extra, and if you launch Treatment Wallet, we'll run a free SMS campaign to your entire client base to help you launch it.

Your business absorbs the processing cost

Every payment collected through a Phorest membership carries a processing fee that comes out of what lands in your account. In Australia, Phorest offers a way to pass that cost on to clients at checkout, but it works by adding a fee to how the client pays, the exact kind of fee due to be phased out under card payment reforms landing 1 October 2026. It's not something worth building a pricing strategy around. With aglow, the member service fee is paid by the member as part of their membership, it isn't taken out of your revenue.

Membership isn't the focus

Phorest supports hundreds of features across booking, POS, marketing and staff management. Memberships are one line item among many. It's not their core product, and it shows in how far the feature goes. Ours is the whole job, and it gets deeper every month. Client retention, predictable revenue and loyalty, built into the experience through a wrap-around service, not bolted onto software that has other priorities.

We chose aglow because it's simple but does everything we need. It works with all our existing systems and takes care of the payments automatically, which saves us so much time and headaches.

Treatment Plans

Phorest doesn't offer consultation-led plans. What it has are templates and bundles, single services or fixed combinations, set up by the clinic in advance, and every client on that plan gets the same thing. Treatment Plans are built individually during consultation, around one client's specific goals and budget. That consultation doesn't have to happen in the room either, aglow's AI consultations run the same process from your website, working off your actual treatment menu and pricing, day or night, with no staff member needed to start it. Across the aglow network, Treatment Plans see 87% protocol completion, clients actually finishing what they started.

Treatment Wallet

Phorest's generic credit banks have no compliance structure built in, nothing stops a clinic accidentally breaching TGA and AHPRA rules by tying a discount or a VIP perk to spend that ends up going on injectables. Treatment Wallet is purpose built to work within TGA and AHPRA guidelines, keeps funds off the clinic's balance sheet, protects client balances if a clinic closes, and works with Apple Pay and Google Pay for a tap-and-go experience at the till.

Subscriptions

Phorest's recurring, service-based plans do a similar job to aglow Subscriptions on paper, but there's more separating them than payment cadence alone. Phorest's fastest cycle is fortnightly, then monthly or quarterly, no weekly option, and weekly is by far the most commonly chosen frequency among aglow members. Reaching those members costs more too, Phorest charges for SMS beyond your included allowance, so every invite and reminder has a cost attached, while aglow's SMS invites and reminders don't. Subscriptions can also be sold everywhere a client already is, a QR code in the clinic, an embedded widget on your website, a link shared on social, or a simple SMS or email invite, all landing in the same contract framework, dashboard and support line as Treatment Plans and Treatment Wallet, rather than mixing a Phorest plan with a separate tool for anything Phorest can't compliantly do.

Frequently asked questions

Is aglow worth it for a solo or small clinic, or should I start in Phorest and switch later?

Small teams feel the benefit most. When there's no admin person, failed payments, cancellation disputes and member questions land on whoever's holding the needle. aglow takes those off your plate from day one. If you've got five or fewer members and no plan to grow, Phorest is fine. Past ten and growing, you'll want the system.

Do I have to stop using Phorest to use aglow?

No. aglow works alongside Phorest, not instead of it. You keep booking appointments through Phorest exactly as you do now. aglow runs your membership programme on top: contracts, payment chasing, member support and compliance.

What happens to my memberships if I switch booking software away from Phorest?

If your memberships are set up through Phorest, they're tied to that platform. With aglow, memberships were never tied to your booking software to begin with, so a change in booking platform doesn't mean losing your membership setup, history or contracts.

Does Phorest offer consultation-led treatment plans?

No. Phorest's plans are templates or bundles set up by the clinic in advance, the same plan for every client who joins it. aglow's Treatment Plans are built individually during consultation, tailored to that client's specific goals and budget.

Does Phorest have anything like an AI consultation tool?

Not in the way aglow does. Phorest's website tools capture an enquiry and route it to your dashboard for a staff member to follow up. aglow's AI consultations run the consultation itself, using your specific treatment menu and pricing, build a personalised treatment plan, and send it for the client to accept, at any hour, without a staff member involved. Whether it converts on the spot or not, you get a lead with real detail attached rather than just a name and a phone number.

Does aglow charge extra for SMS?

No. SMS invites and payment reminders are included, no extra cost per message. If you launch Treatment Wallet, aglow also runs a free SMS campaign to your entire client base to help you launch it.

Do credit-based memberships create a liability for my business?

Yes, generally. Money collected for services not yet delivered is treated as unearned revenue, a liability on your balance sheet until it's redeemed. Treatment Wallet works differently: funds sit in a ringfenced account through aglow's card infrastructure rather than your business bank account, so they don't carry the same balance sheet impact.

Do I have to do double data entry across two systems?

No. You work in Phorest exactly as you do now. There's one small change at checkout, and it takes seconds. When a member comes in, add their service to the appointment as normal. Hit checkout to move to the payment screen. Then, instead of card or cash, check them out using the aglow payment button. That's the whole difference. One tap. And it does a job for you: because membership sales go through the aglow payment type, they sit on their own filterable line, separate from your real card and cash takings. Your end-of-day totals stay clean without you reconciling anything.

Can Phorest's memberships handle injectables?

Not in any purpose-built way. Phorest's generic credit banks have no structure to keep injectable spend clear of discounts, perks or pre-selling, the exact things TGA and AHPRA rules restrict, so that risk sits with the clinic to manage. aglow's Treatment Wallet is purpose built to work within TGA and AHPRA guidelines, giving clients a way to set money aside ahead of their visit while keeping every clinical decision separate from the financial one.

Is aglow more expensive than running memberships through Phorest?

Usually the other way around, and the gap grows with your team.

Phorest charges per bookable staff member, so every practitioner you add puts the price up. Memberships also sit on Phorest's top tier, so running them means being on its most expensive plan.

aglow doesn't work like that. Pricing is published and flat starting from $19 AUD a month. Same price whether you've got one practitioner or ten, and the same whether you run one membership or a thousand. Treatment Wallet is the one exception, it carries a member service fee on redemptions. Everything else is that monthly fee and nothing more.

So the bigger your clinic, the wider the gap. And for that fee you're not just getting software, you're getting the service around it: automated payment chasing, member support, a legal contract framework, and the member service fee built into what members pay rather than absorbed by your business. aglow's SMS invites and member marketing are free too, where Phorest charges for messages beyond your allowance.

See our pricing page for full detail.

Can members pay weekly with Phorest memberships?

No. Phorest's membership billing cycles are fortnightly, monthly or quarterly, set by the clinic. There's no weekly option. With aglow, members choose their own payment frequency, including weekly, which is the most popular choice among aglow members.

Does Phorest publish its pricing?

No. Phorest pricing is quote based, tailored to your business size, locations and features, so there's no way to compare costs without going through a sales conversation. aglow's pricing plans are published on our website.

Who pays the payment processing fee on a membership, the clinic or the client?

With aglow, you avoid card surcharging entirely. Here's the difference.

Phorest's payments run through PhorestPay, which processes card payments. Card surcharging isn’t permitted in Australia, so the processing fees on those payments sit with the business. You're paying them.

aglow works differently. Your members choose how they pay, by card or direct debit, and the aglow member service fee applies the same either way. Because it's the same regardless of payment method, it isn't a card surcharge, and it can be included in your members' instalment amounts rather than coming out of your revenue.
